Autumn Curriculum

Autumn Curriculum

During the Autumn term, the children learn how to read and write a variety of different text types such as non-fiction, fiction and poetry texts. We will begin with a recount, writing about a trip to the Arctic! We will then move on to an adventure-suspense story, followed by a report about dragons. Most of the texts are found online, including on the Penn Wood YouTube channel. Please do support your child at home by encouraging them to read a variety of texts including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, articles and plays. The children visit the school library regularly and are allowed to borrow two books at a time. Children are encouraged to read daily to develop their comprehension skills and widen their vocabulary.

In Maths this Autumn, we will be focusing on the quick recall of important number facts, such as our number bonds (up to 100) and times tables (up to their 12s). Children are encouraged to regularly log into Times Table Rockstars to practice their times tables fluency and speed up their recall. Conquer Maths is another amazing website that the children have access to. It provides them with a wealth of high-quality lessons, broken down into accessible steps that the children can use at home. During lessons, the children will continue to learn about place value and written methods of calculation for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will develop their learning of time and units of measure so please encourage your child to tell the time regularly at home.

In Science, we are learning all about Electricity, allowing children to make circuits and understand how electricity travels. In History, we are learning about what life was like during the Roman times. The children will be learning about the rights and responsibilities of being a member of their class and school and learning to understand how an individual’s behaviour can affect a group. In RE, the children will be studying Judaism, Christianity and Egyptian kings as gods. The children will also spend time developing their sketching and shading skills in Art.

Please ensure your child arrives to school on time (8:50), and that you are ready to collect them at the end of the day at 3:15pm. Ensure your child completes their homework weekly on Google classrooms and that your child’s daily reading is complete. Thank you for all the support you give your child.  It is very important that we continue to work in partnership with you to ensure they make the most of their learning opportunities.

We look forward to an exciting year with your children!
