Spring Curriculum

Spring Curriculum

This term, we will be reading and writing a range of non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Children will be reading and writing character descriptions and dilemma stories, followed by some poetry by Pie Corbett. Children will be encouraged to use a range of different tools in their writing, in order for them to develop their individual writing style. It would help your child enormously if you could support their learning by encouraging them to read a selection of fiction and non-fiction texts. The children are allowed to borrow two books at a time from the Active Learning Library and we are also fairly close to both Britwell and Slough libraries. There is also a wealth of websites with free e-books on the internet, (such as Reading Buddy Online).

In Maths, we will be focusing on quick recall of important number facts, such as our number bonds (up to 1000) and times tables (12 x 12 and ‘teen’ numbers). Children will continue to have class vs class Times Table Rockstar tournaments and are encouraged to complete two soundchecks a day. The children will be developing their knowledge of area, fractions, decimals and geometry. If you would like to know what methods your child is being taught, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

In other subjects, we are exploring the different States of Matter in Science and learning all about how we hear sounds.

Our History topic for the Summer term is the Greeks. The children will be exploring how people lived in Ancient Greece. They will learn about the famous Trojan War, Olympics and Democracy in Ancient Greece.

The year 4 Geography topic will be on the Growth of Cities. The children will find out about the population of different cities in Europe, different types of settlements and learn all about physical and human geography.

In RE, the children will be studying the Easter story and learn about different moral codes. For music, the children will continue to learn different musical pieces on the violin. They will begin to learn how to use their bows to play the violin.

During their art lessons, the children will have the opportunity to make their own Greek patterns. They will interpret designs and images on various pottery and paintings, paying attention to colour, pattern and design to understanding their purpose. They will then have a go at making their own Greek pot. In D&T lessons, children will create and program their own switches.

In PSHE lessons, the children will be focusing on Being Responsible. They will identify the difference between a sensible decision and one that could potentially have negative consequences. They will also learn about feelings and emotions, how to manage and channel their feelings into positive actions. Children will also discuss the impact their words and actions can have on those around them.

Please ensure your child arrives to school on time (8:50), and that you are ready to collect them at the end of the day at 3:15pm. Please continue to ensure your child completes their homework weekly on Google classrooms and that your child’s daily reading is complete. Many thanks for all the support you give your child, we couldn’t do it without your support! It is very important that we continue to work in partnership with you to ensure children maximise their learning opportunities.
