Summer Curriculum

Summer Curriculum

We have got a stimulating summer ahead for the children! This term, we will be reading and writing a range of non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Children will be reading and writing fantasy and dilemma stories, followed by some poetry by Pie Corbett. Children will be looking at creating suspense and building dramatic effects into their stories, through a range of different writing techniques. It would help your child enormously if you could support their learning by encouraging them to read a selection of fiction and non-fiction books. The children are allowed to borrow two books at a time from the Active Learning Library and we are also fairly close to both Britwell and Slough libraries. There is also a wealth of resources on the internet.

In Maths, we will be focusing on quick recall of important number facts, such as our number bonds (up to 1000) and times tables (12 x 12 and ‘teen’ numbers). Children will continue to have class vs class Times Table Rockstar tournaments and are encouraged to complete two soundchecks a day. The children will be developing their knowledge of money, measure, decimals, graphs, position and direction. If you would like to know what methods your child is being taught, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher. We will also carry out a Multiplication Table test.

In other subjects, we are investigating animals and their habitats in Science, exploring the woodlands to research the different habitats of minibeasts.

Our History topic for the Summer term is the Egyptians. The children will be exploring how the Egyptians lived and established themselves as a wealthy and successful society. They will look at the famous Egyptian pyramids, mummification, the River Nile and the various gods and goddesses.

The year 4 Geography topic will be on Agriculture. The children will find out about the different types of agriculture in the UK, farming techniques, the types of cops grown and the conditions needed to grow them. They will also look at examples of physical geography around the world, including biomes, volcanoes, mountains and rivers.

In RE, the children will be studying the impact of the spread of Christianity and the way followers of the Jewish faith show their commitment towards God. For music, the children will continue to learn different musical pieces on the violin. They will learn how to use their bows to play fast-paced pieces of music.

During their art lessons, the children will have the opportunity to make their own Egyptian patterns. They will interpret designs and images on various pottery and paintings, paying attention to colour, pattern and design to understanding their purpose. They will understand the significance of different patterns before making their own.

During their PE lessons, the children will practise their ball skills before playing football and rounders matches.

In PSHE lessons, the children will be focusing on The Working World. They will identify the jobs they do at home, identify ways in which they can help those who look after them, explain the positive impact of their actions and describe the ways in which they can contribute to their home, school and community.

In Computing, children will learn about how to stay safe when they are online and what they can do to ensure they use the internet in a safe way.

Please ensure your child arrives to school on time (8:50), and that you are ready to collect them at the end of the day at 3:15pm. Please continue to wear a mask and keep a distance with other households. Ensure your child completes their homework weekly on Google classrooms and that your child’s daily reading is complete. Many thanks for all the support you give your child, we couldn’t do it without your support! It is very important that we continue to work in partnership with you to ensure children maximise their learning opportunities.
