Year 4 Trip to the Ashmolean Museum

Year 4 recently embarked on an exciting and educational trip to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. As the University of Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, and Britain’s first public museum, the Ashmolean houses an extraordinary collection of artefacts from across the world, spanning thousands of years of human history. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for children to bring their classroom learning to life in a setting filled with real historical treasures.

A key focus of the trip was Ancient Greece, a topic Year 4 have been studying during the spring term. The children took part in interactive workshops all about life in Ancient Greece. Through hands-on activities, discussion, and close observation of artefacts, pupils explored what daily life might have been like for Greek citizens. They examined pottery, armour, coins, and sculptures, learning how these objects can help historians understand the past. The workshops encouraged pupils to ask thoughtful questions and think like historians, piecing together clues from the objects in front of them.

Beyond the workshop, the classes had the chance to explore the museum’s galleries dedicated to the ancient world. Walking through the Ancient Greece displays, pupils were fascinated to see authentic artefacts up close. Seeing these objects in person helped the children deepen their understanding of Greek culture, mythology, trade, and daily life. Teachers were delighted to hear pupils confidently using their knowledge to discuss what they had learned in lessons.

The trip also provided an opportunity for children to follow their own interests. In addition to the Greek galleries, pupils were able to visit other exhibits that captured their curiosity. Oak class visited the museum’s collection of historic stringed instruments, including violins, which had been recommended by the children’s violin teacher, Mr Bango.  We couldn't wait to tell him when we got back!

Throughout the day, the behaviour of Year 4 was impeccable. Museum staff and members of the public commented on the pupils’ politeness, enthusiasm, and respectful conduct. The children listened carefully during workshops, moved thoughtfully through the galleries, and represented the school with pride. The trip to the Ashmolean Museum was a memorable experience that enriched the children’s understanding of Ancient Greece while also broadening their appreciation of art, history, and music. It was a day full of discovery, inspiration, and excellent learning beyond the classroom walls.
