Year 2 Curriculum Overview

In English this term we will begin by learning the traditional tale ‘Rapunzel’ and reading many other traditional tales. You can borrow traditional stories from the library to share with your child at home as this would be very beneficial to their understanding of this unit of work. By the end of the topic the children will be creating their own traditional tales. Later this term, we will also be learning how to write a set of instructions. It would be fantastic if you could encourage your child to read widely at home, both fiction and non-fiction.  The children are allowed to borrow two books at a time from the Active Learning Library which supports their reading in many ways.

Maths this term, will ensure that your child is secure in their knowledge of number and place value. We will be adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers and will teach your child mental methods for this, as well as appropriate written methods of calculation. We will also be introducing 3D shapes and their properties as well as money where we will be combing different coins to make a specific amount.  Children will also begin to learn their 2, 5 and 10 times tables, so please help to support their learning of these at home.

We love reading and will encourage your children to read daily.  Please listen to your child read, discuss the book and fill in his/her reading record.  Please ask your child’s class teacher if you have any questions about this or any other learning.

Please remember the children will be taking the KS1 Tests at the end of May, therefore practising reading, writing, spelling and maths at home is as important as ever.

Many thanks for all the support you give your child.  It is very important that we continue to work in partnership with you to ensure they make the most of their learning opportunities.

The Year Two team are always happy to help you and your child, please come and speak to us if you have any queries or would like more ideas to support your child at home.
