The Arts

At Penn Wood, the Arts: Dance, Drama, Music and Art and Design are an important part of the school curriculum.

At Penn Wood Primary School, we are lucky enough to have a specialist Music teacher and Drama teacher.  Drama is used throughout the school to support both Literacy and other areas of the curriculum.  The confidence built through performing well, speaking clearly and with meaning benefits the children immensely.  In the National curriculum for Art and Music, there is now a greater emphasis on pupils knowing and appreciating great artists, composers and architects. Skills in drawing, painting and 3D design or sculpture are developed each year. In Music, children have the opportunity to develop skills in areas of listening, performing, composing, singing and improvisation. In the Early years, all children are taught the subject specific skills and the children are encouraged to practise and master these skills throughout their day. Drama and role play are an integral part of the daily curriculum, as well as singing and learning a variety of songs.

Productions each year at Christmas and at the end of year 6 showcase pupils’ talents in the arts. Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in performances and workshop days outside of school. Penn Wood Primary School continues to work with the local hub, Slough Music service, to provide whole class violin lessons to the year 4 pupils. Beyond Year 4, pupils have the opportunity to continue learning the violin or another instrument in group lessons. There are opportunities for children to continue their enjoyment of arts in a number of arts based after school clubs. These clubs include Drama club, Art and Design club, Choir and African drumming.
