  • Heathrow Young Explorers

Tue 14 Mar 2023 Miss Allen

Year 6 had some special visitors from Heathrow Airport today. They had a fantastic workshop with 'Learning to Work' - one of Heathrow’s Education Business Partners. They delivered a challenge on behalf of Heathrow with the support of  Heathrow volunteers. Pupils worked in groups of 3 to create their design, utilising 3D software and honing their presentation skills as they competed to design the most innovative transport solution.

As Heathrow Explorers, they came up with design ideas for a transport solution that will make travel throughout the airport even more sustainable.  The challenge provided an enjoyable way for Year 6  to explore roles at the airport while developing the core Heathrow World of Work skills.

  • Panathlon Festival 2023

Thu 23 Feb 2023 Mrs Downer

Penn Wood recently participated in the Slough School Sport Network Panathlon event against other local schools. The children took part in a range of activities including bowling, target throw, curling, paddle ball, boccia, table cricket, basketball and the parachute challenge.

Each of them worked incredibly hard, developing skills, applying teamwork and collecting points along the way.

Overall, against 9 other schools, Penn Wood won the gold medal! We are, quite rightly, incredibly proud of this achievement. The team are now invited to represent Slough in the Berkshire School Games Final in April.

    Congratulations to the Panathlon team!

  • Boccia Festival

Tue 29 Nov 2022 Mrs Downer

    Boccia Festival

The children had a fantastic time at the Boccia festival. They were especially invited due to their fantastic effort in PE this term, so congratulations!

The rules of the Boccia festival were clearly explained and the children took turns play against the other schools around Slough and Langley areas.

The game consists of 4 ends, 6 ends for teams. During each end, players must throw all their balls out. The scores are determined by the rule that all the balls that are closer to the jack ball than the opponent's the nearest ball are counted in the score. Points for scoring bets are added for all 4 shifts.

Everybody had lots of fun learning a new sport and we are excited to receive our newly ordered Boccia set for all to enjoy during PE in the terms ahead.

  • Year 5's Fire Visit

    Thu 24 Nov 2022

Today, Year 5 enjoyed learning about the role of firefighters and how to stay safe when there is a fire. The children were shown the inside of a fire engine and how all of the tools are organised. They were also amazed to find out that firefighters have so many other important responsibilities in addition to rescuing animals and people from fires, such as: helping people in road traffic accidents, continuing their training when not on duty and more!

  • Christmas Unwrapped

    Tue 22 Nov 2022

Year 6 had a fun visit from Wayne Dixon, Slough Baptist Church, today.

They learnt some new facts about the Christmas story, listening to Wayne 'spit some bars' as he rapped over a backing track, and busted some newly acquired 'floor moves'.

    Thank you, Wayne!

  • Children in Need Pudsey Visit

    Fri 18 Nov 2022

We were delighted to receive a visit from Pudsey today.  Our day started with an assembly led by Mrs Girle.  She told all of the children about the important work Children in Need do.

Then Pudsey visited the children who were dressed in brightly coloured clothes to raise money to support Children in Need.

You have all helped us to raise an amazing £1668.73!  Thank you!

  • Year 6 WW2 Workshop at Eton College

    Thu 17 Nov 2022

Year 6 went to Eton College to further develop their understanding of World War Two and the impact it had on Britain.

They looked at how Britain defended itself during the Blitz, the propaganda and homefront work that made up the war effort, and even learnt how to disable incendiary bombs.

  • Slough School Sport Network Fencing Festival

Mon 14 Nov 2022 Mrs Downer

    Fencing Festival

A group of Year 6 children, selected for their outstanding efforts in PE this term, were invited to attend the Slough School Sports network fencing festival.

They participated in a range of sporting activities, all designed to improve various skills in fencing, but definitely transferable to other sports also.

The children really enjoyed the activities set, and they were encouraged to try to improve their own skill set throughout, with mini competitions between them and other schools in Slough and Langley.

The coaches were fantastic, and we are excited to announce that we have secured Little Musketeers to attend Penn Wood next term, bringing fencing into the Year 3 Curriculum and enlightening even more children to explore a new sport. How exciting!

  • School Games Mark - Silver Award Achieved

Mon 14 Nov 2022 Mrs Downer

The PE Team are very proud to announce that Penn Wood have recently achieved the Silver Award in the School Games Mark!

The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Participating in this process allows us to evaluate our PE provision and assists them in developing an action plan for future progress.

School Games registered schools are eligible to apply once a year during an application window, which traditionally takes place during the summer term, and are graded against set criteria. The School Games Mark is a retrospective award and all answers submitted consider the current academic year.

    What are the key criteria?

Each School Games Mark application is divided into four sets of questions. They cover the following basic topics:

    • Participation - how many young people at our school are being engaged in sporting activity?
    • Competition - how many different sports are being played and how many competitions are being entered?
    • Workforce - how many pupils are involved in leadership activities alongside taking part in competitions?
    • Clubs - how many local links does our school have with clubs or establishments from the area?
    •
