On 12th November, Violin club performed four pieces of music at a special recital concert celebrating the musical achievements of pupils receiving instrumental tuition from Slough Music Service. Alexandru Bogatu, as a violin student of Mr Bango, also performed a piece as a soloist. All pupils played beautifully together demonstrating wonderful skills such as bow control and use of the fingerboard. Well done to all the performers and to Mr Bango for his enthusiasm and talent at bringing out the best in our pupils!
On 8th November, Toscana strings performed excerpts of The Nutcracker ballet by Tchaikovsky to pupils from years 1 to 6. The story was acted out by a ballerina and pupils were encouraged to move and dance at key moments in the story, responding to the expressive changes in the music. A year 2 pupil exclaimed how much they loved it. The performance was well received by everyone.
Year 3 were delighted to visit the Mosque as part of our RW topic this term. They were able to explore the Mosque and understand how a Muslim follows the religion after discussions led by the members of the community. The children enjoyed learning how to write their names in Arabic, tasting healthy snacks and dress up in traditional wear.
Year 3 participated in Stone Age Day to help consolidate their learning this term. They had the opportunity to take part in a Stone Age workshop where they went back in time and experienced what life was like in pre- historic times by looking at different artefacts. They were so excited to hold real ancient flint artefacts! They also created their own cave paintings and made their very own clay pot. Everybody dressed up and looked fantastic!
Year 5 have been enjoying our Anglo Saxon Day, learning about Anglo Saxon weapons, clothes and food. We got a chance to handle weapons, examine artefacts and dress up.
Year 6 put on a wonderful performance of Oliver for us all to enjoy. Here are some of the photos!
Year 3 had an amazing day out to Whipsnade Zoo! It was a sunny day and we had lots of fun! We saw lots of different animals including elephants, lions, bears, penguins, cheetahs and so many more. We were very lucky to see a young giraffe who was born a few days earlier. It was adorable! It was a fantastic day!
Well done Year 3 for being superstars and so well behaved!
We completed our Cycle to School week with a little extra sparkle this year. Children throughout the school were invited to decorate their bikes or scooters as they wished and what a success the day was! The bike rack was FULL of colours using balloons, streamers, flags, teddies and even some home made computer game and Vespa themes! Thank you to everyone who helped to make this such a momentous occasion. The children thoroughly enjoyed parading around the school playgrounds, proudly displaying their bikes for all to admire to the ‘Bicycle Race’ song by Queen. The photos really do not do the day justice. The children were beaming from ear to ear and everyone enjoyed an enchanting atmosphere whether they were in the parade or admiring from afar. WOW!
Safety First!
Year 5 and 6 explored the local roads with BeSpoke once again this term. Before they set off, the children are first taught how to check that their bikes are safe to ride and how to adjust the bike to make it a suitable mode of transport, including what to do if the chain gets caught and misaligned. Then the children adjust helmets and learn about correct positioning and signalling when notifying other road users of their next move. Finally they cycle outside of school, putting all of this knowledge into practice. The children road as a group, paired and individually, in preparation for when they might be riding to their secondary school, or out with friends and family. This is a fantastic course that really does prepare the children for real life experiences. Thank you to Bespoke for this invaluable opportunity for Penn Wood pupils!
Year 5 had a wonderful day at West Wittering Beach! They started with a lifeguard talk which included a rescue demonstration and understanding the meaning of different flags.
After lunch, the children spent time building sandcastles, playing in the sand and some ball games.
The children enjoyed experiencing the fresh cold waves of the sea, followed by an ice cream!
