  • It's Your Move - Year 6 workshop with Wayne Dixon

Wed 14 Jun 2023 Miss Allen

On Wednesday the 14th June, Wayne Dixon came to visit Year 6 to talk about their move to Secondary School. Year 6 had a fun workshop including stories, raps and shoulder dancing!

Each child left with a secondary school survival guide and a lovely piece of insightful advice:

Be yourself. Don't feel afraid to be yourself. We are all unique for a reason. There is something you have to offer this world that no one else has. Don't waste time comparing yourself to others or wishing you were more like someone else. Work to improve yourself, but do it because you want to be the best version of you not a copy of someone else. Above all, be kind!

  • DASH - Courtroom Workshop in Year 6

Tue 16 May 2023 Miss Allen

Eleanor from the DASH charity came in to deliver a workshop for Year 6.

They learnt about the parts, people and roles in a Courtroom. They were then put into groups and given a statement to argue for or against.

The children then presented their arguments to their classes and discussed some important issues like managing anger and gender stereotypes like 'men are stronger than women'.

The children enjoyed the workshop and learnt tips and ideas for arguing effectively and supporting their arguments.

  • Worldwide BMX Champion Mike Mullen

Wed 03 May 2023 Mrs Downer

    Sporting Athlete Visit

We had a very special visitor this week; Mike Mullen the UK halfpipe pro champion and former world master halfpipe champion.

Mike did a very special assembly, and explained his journey (with all the ups and downs) and what inspired him to a start doing BMX. Amazed by the excitement of bicycle stunts, and the creative possibilities within BMX, Mike formed a dream to become a professional biker. Without parental support, coaches or a team, Mike learnt to become resourceful and chanelled his energy to fulfil his dream. That ultimately translated into winning two world championship titles, performing all across the world and founding his own BMX Academy.

Mike has now been a motivational speaker, athlete role model and workshop facilitator for 15 years; he uses BMX to help children improve their mindset, confidence and well being.

Mike impressed us with a few tricks in assembly including, standing on a bike, riding backwards and jumping over Miss Allen and Mrs Downer (eek!).

The Year 5 pupils were lucky enough to have a workshop with Mike and he talked about the meaning of a 'Flearn', where you fail, but you learn from it and don't give up. At the end of the week a few of the children were selected to put on a showcase for us all to enjoy. The children all managed to try things that were out of their comfort zone and build confidence.

It was such a fantastic day and one that none of us will be forgetting in a long time! :)

  • Year 5's visit to St Paul's Church, Slough.

    Mon 20 Mar 2023 M.Tang

Year 5 went on a walk to St Paul's Church, Slough. When we arrived, we took part in different activities and learnt about the story of Easter. We found out that Easter is a very important time of year for Christians because this is when Christians remember how Jesus sacrificed his life for others. We had the opportunity to research and sequence events of the story and even did an egg and spoon race at the end!

  • Heathrow Young Explorers

Tue 14 Mar 2023 Miss Allen

Year 6 had some special visitors from Heathrow Airport today. They had a fantastic workshop with 'Learning to Work' - one of Heathrow’s Education Business Partners. They delivered a challenge on behalf of Heathrow with the support of  Heathrow volunteers. Pupils worked in groups of 3 to create their design, utilising 3D software and honing their presentation skills as they competed to design the most innovative transport solution.

As Heathrow Explorers, they came up with design ideas for a transport solution that will make travel throughout the airport even more sustainable.  The challenge provided an enjoyable way for Year 6  to explore roles at the airport while developing the core Heathrow World of Work skills.

  • Panathlon Festival 2023

Thu 23 Feb 2023 Mrs Downer

Penn Wood recently participated in the Slough School Sport Network Panathlon event against other local schools. The children took part in a range of activities including bowling, target throw, curling, paddle ball, boccia, table cricket, basketball and the parachute challenge.

Each of them worked incredibly hard, developing skills, applying teamwork and collecting points along the way.

Overall, against 9 other schools, Penn Wood won the gold medal! We are, quite rightly, incredibly proud of this achievement. The team are now invited to represent Slough in the Berkshire School Games Final in April.

    Congratulations to the Panathlon team!

  • Boccia Festival

Tue 29 Nov 2022 Mrs Downer

    Boccia Festival

The children had a fantastic time at the Boccia festival. They were especially invited due to their fantastic effort in PE this term, so congratulations!

The rules of the Boccia festival were clearly explained and the children took turns play against the other schools around Slough and Langley areas.

The game consists of 4 ends, 6 ends for teams. During each end, players must throw all their balls out. The scores are determined by the rule that all the balls that are closer to the jack ball than the opponent's the nearest ball are counted in the score. Points for scoring bets are added for all 4 shifts.

Everybody had lots of fun learning a new sport and we are excited to receive our newly ordered Boccia set for all to enjoy during PE in the terms ahead.

  • Year 5's Fire Visit

    Thu 24 Nov 2022

Today, Year 5 enjoyed learning about the role of firefighters and how to stay safe when there is a fire. The children were shown the inside of a fire engine and how all of the tools are organised. They were also amazed to find out that firefighters have so many other important responsibilities in addition to rescuing animals and people from fires, such as: helping people in road traffic accidents, continuing their training when not on duty and more!
