  • IAN ROSE VISIT

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
On Monday 18th March, Penn Wood was very fortunate to host a visit by Ian Rose, a Paralympian judo athlete. The day started with an inspirational assembly with Ian sharing his life story and explaining how important having resilience was in helping him to overcome huge obstacles and be successful in the sporting world. A set of workshops followed for year 5 pupils with pupils and teachers learning more about resilience and also practising strategies to develop self-regulation.
  • YEAR 3 - KEW GARDENS

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
Year 3 couldn’t wait to finally go to Kew Gardens! We had been learning about it for weeks, studying advertisements for Kew Gardens and writing persuasive letters to Mrs Girle to allow us to go on this trip. This meant we knew what to expect and what to look out for when we arrived. It was even better than we expected. We loved exploring the state of the art glasshouses and all the exotic plants inside. We were lucky because there was a fantastic Orchid festival on in one of the glasshouses. The weather was beautiful, which meant we could rest our legs and have a picnic outside with our friends. To tie in with our recent Science unit on plants, we took part in an educational workshop where we got to pollinate flowers with paintbrushes!
  • YEAR 1 - BEALE PARK

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
This term Year 1 visited Beale Park as part of their learning of animals in science. The day was full of wonderful activities such as a train ride around the park, an opportunity to look at toys from the past and seeing model boats, as well as seeing all of the incredible birds and wildlife at the park. We saw wallabies, lemurs, meerkats, monkeys and lots of different birds and reptiles! Year 1  learnt so much about these fantastic animals and the habitats they live in and they came back to school bursting with knowledge and eager to learn even more! A fantastic, but very wet, day was had by all and our trip to Beale Park was an incredible experience that the children wont forget! The children behaved extremely well and were proud representatives of Penn Wood School.
  • YEAR 5 - PLANETARIUM VISIT

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
Year 5 recently enjoyed an eye-opening trip through the universe! As part of the children’s topic of Earth and Space, a learning dome was erected in the school hall.  Inside the dome, the children were taken on a tour around our planet. Children discovered our place in the solar system and were shown how to spot a range of star clusters. By the end of the visit, the children were better equipped to knowledgeably study the night skies. Using their detective and observation skills, they should, amongst other things, now be able to understand why day turns into night and what makes the moon look different shapes.
  • SPORTS FIXTURE ROUND UP - SEPTEMBER TO JANUARY

    Thu 17 Oct 2019

This year Penn Wood will have even more opportunities to participate in tournaments than ever before. At the start of the Autumn term,  pupils from year 3/4 participated in a football tournament, which was held again at Penn Wood school. Pupils showed impressive team work, just missing out on the semi finals by goal difference! Pupils in year 3 also had the opportunity to attend the Change 4 Life tournament, coming in the top 3 in that event.

The boys 5/6 football league has also got off to a great start with the boys not losing any of their five matches and staying top of the league! A wonderful achievement. Let's hope they can keep their unbeaten run and win the league this year!

The 3/4 boys have also started their league well with a win against Godolphin. The 3/4 girls also began their league with a hard match against Lynch Hill. This is the first time the girls have been in the league and they are looking forward to playing more matches as the year progresses. The 5/6 girls football team started their league competition against Claycots with a huge 3-0 win! Congratulations to all our teams!

This year, we have also taken part in the Netball league for the first time. Penn Wood started well with a win against St Ethelbert's. Despite a recent loss against Western House, the team are determined to do better in their next game.

  • THE SNOWMAN

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
On Friday 25th January, Toscana strings performed a Snowman themed concert to pupils in years 1 to 6. During the concert, the pupils enjoyed hearing music from "The Snowman" film by Raymond Briggs alongside a narration of the story.  In addition to learning more about the stringed instruments, they also had the opportunity to hear a section of the Winter concerto from Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons".
  • RECEPTION - VET VISIT

    Thu 17 Oct 2019

This half term in literacy, our focus text has been ‘At the End of the Rainbow.’ In this story, there a vet called Mr Jenkins. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Mrs Mielcarek, a real veterinary nurse, to talk to us about her job! This half term in literacy, our focus text has been ‘At the End of the Rainbow.’ In this story, there a vet called Mr Jenkins. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Mrs Mielcarek, a real veterinary nurse, to talk to us about her job!

She brought in lots of real photographs and props from the veterinary surgery with her for us to look at and explore. She taught us why it is important to take our pets to the vets, why pets are microchipped and what happens when our pets get poorly. Mrs Mielcarek talked us through how to put on bandages, how to listen to a heartbeat using a stethoscope and she even showed us what vets wear when they are performing operations. Mrs Lewandowska modelled the outfit for us!

We have all learnt so much about the role of a vet – thank you Mrs Mielcarek!

  • YEAR 5 - ANGLO-SAXON DAY

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
In November, Year 5 took part in an Anglo-Saxon day. During the day, the children learnt many things about Anglo-Saxon England, from language and food right through to struggles for survival of the people. A particular highlight was the chance to observe and touch realistic artefacts from the time. The children enjoyed using their detective, observation and questioning skills to discover the uses for a range of items. The day was brought to a dramatic conclusion when the children worked as a team to re-enact a burial!
Overall, the day provided an inspiring introduction for the children's Anglo-Saxon History studies.
