  • Fancy feet at Footgolf!

Tue 21 May 2024 Mrs Downer

Footgolf is an event ran by SSSN that incorporates a range of football skills to compete a circuit against other schools. The idea of the game is to try to complete all 9 activities in the least amount of tries, in order to score. The team with the lowest score, is the winner, much like golf. We didn’t take home the gold (this time), but we certainly felt like winners! Smiles all round. What a fantastic day!

  • SSSN Year 3 and 4 Cricket Festival

Thu 02 May 2024 Mrs Downer

A selection of year 3 and 4 children represented Penn Wood in the Slough School Sport Network (SSSN) cricket event this term. They partook in a range of cricket themed activities and learned some new tricks along the way. Thank you to the Berkshire Cricket Foundation for such a fabulous day!

  • SSSN and Creative Academy Dance Festival 2024

Tue 23 Apr 2024 Mrs Downer

On Tuesday 23rd April, many schools from around Slough and Berkshire attended the Slough Dance The Festival at The Curve ran by Creative Academy and Slough School Sports Network (SSSN).

We entered 2 performances; a group of children from year 5 and the after school club. They put on a spectacular show for all to enjoy. This was the very first of its kind, bringing the whole community together for a celebration of rhythmic movement and there was a genuine feeling of nostalgia throughout the whole day.

The children were able to meet new people and experience the magic that happens behind the scenes and the whole day was unforgettable. Congratulations to everyone on a smashing performance! We can’t wait for next year so we can relive this day all over again!

  • A New Sport at Penn Wood - Pillo Polo

Thu 18 Apr 2024 Mrs Downer

This term we were joined by Mr Brown from MNR Coaching, who delivered a very new and interesting sport to Penn Wood, Pillo Polo. Despite its name, there certainly wasn’t any time for napping! Year 3, 5 and 6 enjoyed a range of functional movement games, developing their hand eye co-ordination, accuracy and invasion game strategies throughout teamwork. The game begins with a ‘bully’ which involves two players tapping sticks three times before competing to strike the ball first. Players a penalised for high sticks, using feet and of course, any contact made to another player. Only goalies are allowed to use their feet. This has been a fantastic development at Penn Wood and has increased confidence in the pupils ability to apply their skills to hockey and a range of team sports. Thank you, Mr Brown.

  • Joy of Movement - Brentford Football Club

Wed 17 Apr 2024 Mrs Downer

    Brentford Football Club!

The year 5s were joined by coaches from Brentford Football Club who delivered a brand new unit called the ‘Joy of Movement’. The children learned about the importance of nutrition and lifestyle choices which impact our health and the difference that can makes to performance. It was a fabulous insight into what it takes to be the best version of         themselves and delivered through theory and practical sessions. A wealth of knowledge learned and we hope will continue to impact the children on their fitness journeys throughout their time at Penn Wood and beyond!

  • The Magical World of Quidditch!

Tue 26 Mar 2024 Mrs Downer

There are not many schools that can say that they have mastered the art of Quidditch! Penn Wood    hosted a fantastic 2 day whole school event where the children took part in an opening ceremony to sort the children into brave Griffindor, patient Hufflepuff, creative Ravenclaw and, of course, cunning Slytherin! Well done to Oliwia, Hadi, Jakub and Ekam for being incredibly brave team captains and leading their houses throughout the day.

After the sorting ceremony, each class excelled in a range of teambuilding activities and a fantastic game of Quidditch, where they were trying to score points for their teams throughout the balls through the hoops and of course catching the ‘Golden Snitch’, which involved trying to catch their teacher to score a whopping 50 bonus points! The children were also rewarded with points for demonstrating the Penn Wood values over the two days. During the closing ceremony, some children were awarded with certificates, such as the Spectacular Seeker and the Bustling Bludgers, but Mr Thomson took the title of the Super Speedy Snitch!

Everyone enjoyed this  momentous occasion, and ultimately it was Griffindor who were the overall champions! Have a look in our trophy cabinet to see our amazing new Quidditch Cup shine!

  • Netball Bee Buzzers

Tue 12 Mar 2024 Mrs Downer

On Tuesday 12th March a group of year 2 children set off to Eden Girls School to enjoy a range of netball themed sporting activities. SSSN put on another great day, teamed with an England Netball ambassador. The activities included team and individual tasks with an overall aim of building confidence and just having fun! Super work team!

  • #LetGirlsPlay

Fri 08 Mar 2024 Mrs Downer

On Friday 8th March we celebrated #letgirlsplay day by hosting a year 3/4 and a year 5/6 girls football match. By 2024, The FA’s and Barclays ambition is for girls to have the same football opportunities as boys in schools and clubs.

#LetGirlsPlay is a campaign to drive influence and change perceptions, showing that football can and should be played by girls. It is bringing together a growing community of people of all genders, ages and backgrounds who want to champion equal access for girls, helping create independent, resilient young girls who will be a force for good in all local communities. As this was our 2nd year of celebrations, we really put Penn Wood on the map.

The Sport Ambassadors (SA) were busily leading skills, drills and mini games for KS1 and we also held our very own mini league, refereed by our SAs up on the field at lunchtime. The girls were proud to show off our brand new FA football kits; they brought us some luck too, as the year 3/4 team won 7-6 against St Mary’s!

The whole day was an inspiring success and we can’t wait to continue this level of enthusiasm throughout the rest of the year. You smashed it, girls!

  • World Book Day

Fri 08 Mar 2024 Mrs Mann and Miss Allen

What a wonderful World Book Day we enjoyed yesterday at Penn Wood, with children and staff parading as their favourite book characters. We certainly spent the whole day with big smiles on our faces! A love of books and reading is one of the most important gifts we can give our children and books are a central part of the excellent curriculum that we provide here at Penn Wood.

All of the children read 'Our Tower' by Joseph Coelho, and explored the book with discussion and some lovely written outcomes. They were a pleasure to read!

The older children visited classes from the lower school and some wonderful sharing of books and paired reading melted the hearts of the staff.

We thank you for supporting your child's love of reading and for encouraging them to read and share books. It was also delightful to see so many parents and carers attend Nursery's reading session yesterday morning.

'Books are the Golden Thread of Penn Wood'. Keep reading!
