On Monday 27th and Wednesday 29th January, we were very lucky to welcome Mike Mullen, a former World and UK BMX Halfpipe Champion, to our school.
In an assembly to the whole school, Mike explained how he needed resilience to overcome obstacles in his life; he suffered from asthma, he was painfully shy and his family struggled to afford to buy the equipment needed for his hobby. He also explained how courage and having a growth mindset helped him to master the dangerous tricks and movements he needed to execute on his BMX bike to become a champion. The pupils absolutely loved his demonstration of BMX tricks. In the assembly, Mike skillfully jumped over teachers as well as managing to manoeuvre himself around the bike, while it was in motion. Mrs Shears, our deputy head, bravely volunteered to learn and demonstrate a balancing trick on the bike. She showed great perseverance and courage in tackling and succeeding in this difficult challenge, much to the delight of the children and staff.
Year 5 were lucky enough to participate in workshops on the school playground. Non-riders were given the opportunity to learn to cycle. More experienced riders practised performing simple tricks on the bikes such as simple balances and executing small jumps. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience. It has been lovely to hear the children talking so positively about Mike's visit.
The school year began with the Year 3/4 football tournament. A mixture of boys and girls entered the competition and although they did not make it to the knockout stages, the children played well and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The Year 5/6 girls participated in their first friendly netball match at home against Priory. The girls played superbly beating their opponents. They loved the chance to play against another school.
Later in October saw the Year 5/6 girls take on Willow in the football league. Not letting the weather dampen their mood, they won 3-1. Impressive foot work by the girls and a super penalty saved in the second half kept their spirits high, even in the rain.
November saw lots of league matches take place for all the football teams from Year 3 to 6. The Year 3/4 boys and girls football teams both headed over to Western House for their first league game of the season. The boys put up a good battle but they just missed out on the win. The girls, playing on the pitch next to the boys, showed their brilliant team work and ended up winning the match.
The Year 5/6 boys football team started their campaign strong winning their first match. Although not as successful in the second match, the boys now know what they need to do to get some more wins in the Spring term.
Our Year 6 girl's football team have an unbeaten record winning all the games they played in the Autumn term. They were also lucky enough to host a friendly match which gave them some motivation for the Spring term.
Year 5 and 6 pupils participated in the Change for Life festival at Eden Girls' School. The children did a range of mini games on a rotation and tried to beat their scores on their second attempt. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the mini games. We have even been able to use some of the activities in lesson warm ups.
Year 1/2 children were lucky to go to Eden Girls School to participate in a badminton festival. This allowed the children to try out different badminton skills in various mini games. The children loved learning new skills, and for most of them it was their first opportunity to take part in a sporting festival outside of school.
A great first term! Well done everybody.
Over 200 children took part in our combined Year 5 and Year 6 Production this year - 'Christmas around the world'. The Year 6 children sang a selection of songs and each of the four Year 5 classes performed a short excerpt of a play or a dance.
Olive class were Cossack dancers from Russia and Baobab performed the traditional pantomime Cinderella. Gingko told the story of the Christmas Carol and Banyan took us to Mexico to share story of the Mexican Poinsettia.
We have been asked to update you with the following message from Slough Borough Council.
We have had two separate incidents across Slough where children have been approached by a stranger after school.
The incidents took place in separate schools (one primary school and the other at a secondary school) which included a 9 year old girl on 2nd December and a 11 year old girl on the 12th December.
Both incidents have been reported to the police. We do not want to cause alarm and wish to reassure the public that these types of incidents are rare and it isn’t clear if the two incidents are related.
We do ask that in the lead up to the Christmas break that children are asked to be vigilant as they leave school and where possible leave with friends or family just as a preventative measure.
