  • RECEPTION - PEAR ASSEMBLY

    Fri 13 Dec 2019
Last week, Reception performed in their Winter assemblies for parents, carers and their siblings. We shared stories that we have learnt this half term, we sang wonderful Winter songs and we also shared some of our art work. Each class explained why some people celebrate Christmas during the Winter season and sang ‘Away in a Manger,’ a song about the baby Jesus.
The children put lots of hard work and effort into their assembly – we hope you all enjoyed it!

  • Bauble Workshops

    Thu 12 Dec 2019
Our children had a wonderful time creating a Christmas bauble in school and many parents were able to share in the experience with their children.  The children decorated a ceramic bauble with acrylic paints and are very proud of their work.
  • YEAR 5 - ANGLO SAXON DAY

    Tue 19 Nov 2019
This term, Year 5 took part in an Anglo-Saxon day. During the day, the children were able to touch and observe many varied and realistic artefacts from the time.  The children used their questioning, observation and detective skills to understand the uses for a range of items. They also learnt about the food and daily lives of the Anglo-Saxons and the struggles for survival of the people.
Altogether, the day provided an inspiring insight into the lives of the Anglo-Saxons and effectively complemented the children’s History studies.

Year 3 had an exciting end to their first half term because they were transported back into the Stone Age! They even got the chance to hunt a woolly mammoth - very brave!

  • RECEPTION - OWL VISIT

    Thu 07 Nov 2019

Reception had a lovely visit from Charlie from Kent Owl Academy who came all the way from Maidstone just to visit us! They showed us four different species of owls including a barn owl and a brown owl. The brown owl was called Percy just like Percy from our focus text, ‘Owl Babies.’ The barn owl was called Cupid as he is often the ringbearer at weddings!

We learnt so much about owls such as where they live, what they eat and how they hunt for their food at night time. We had an assembly in the morning where Charlie let Cupid fly over our heads so that we could see its wings and feathers. Did you know that owls with dark eyes are nocturnal animals and owls with lighter eyes come out at dawn and dusk?

Charlie showed us the owl pellets and we learnt that we can find out what the owl has eaten by looking inside. She opened up the pellets and found fur and a skull. The barn owl had eaten a whole mouse!

We each got to stroke the owls and feel how soft their feathers were. The owls didn’t mind at all. We all had a wonderful time and having this real-life experience is really going to help us with our writing next week.

  • YEAR 1 - WINDSOR CASTLE

    Tue 22 Oct 2019

On Tuesday 15th October,  Year 1 went on a trip to Windsor Castle. This trip was planned to support our learning in History about Elizabeth I and Windsor. The day was packed full of activities which gave the children a great insight into what life at the castle would have been like in the past and what it is used for today.

We were there for the grand re-opening of Queen Mary’s doll house which has been under refurbishment for a couple of years. We couldn’t believe how large it is and would love to have played with it! We walked through the State Apartments and admired the amazing paintings and furniture. We also had lots of fun trying to spot the white shields in St George's Hall of knights who had committed treason!

St. George's Chapel was our next stop and it was wonderful to see where some people come to worship as well as the place where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married last year, alongside many other important events.

We also took part in a taught session where a member of staff talked to us about what life was like hundreds of years ago in the castle and about all of the different kings and queens who have lived there over time.

One of our favourite parts of the day was watching the Changing of the Guards. It amazed us how talented the marching band were and we even tried marching like the soldiers ourselves! Year 1 represented Penn Wood proudly and they showed wonderful respect and kindness throughout the day.

  • YEAR 6 - HEATHROW CODING CHALLENGE

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
At the beginning of autumn term, 6 took part in an exciting afternoon completing the Heathrow Coding Challenge led by Spark! The task linked to our ICT curriculum and provided an enjoyable way for the children to explore their enterprise skills and to demonstrate how to be a team player. A range of challenges meant that coding and maths skills were both required. Lots of questions were asked about what life was like at Heathrow and now many children are inspired and are considering a career at the nearby airport.
  • YEAR 2 - WHIPSNADE ZOO

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
Year 2 had the pleasure of visiting Whipsnade Zoo which linked to our science curriculum topic of Living things and their habitats. The children were be able to identify animals in their suited environments.  The children had the exciting opportunity to attend an education workshop. They were taken on a tour by a member of staff around the meerkats, lions and zebras enclosures bringing to life the role camouflage plays in the survival of animals in the wild. They were even lucky enough to feel a patch of real zebra skin as well as see a real lion’s skull. They enjoyed spending time exploring the zoo and discovering how different animals adapted to their surroundings.
  • YEAR 3 - GURDWARA TRIP

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
Year 3 have been studying Sikhism as part of our Religious Education. We took a trip to a local Gurdwara, where we were welcomed by the priest and we learnt about some of the Sikh rituals. We were very interested to find out about the history of Sikhism and the values of the religion. Did you know that Sikhism is 550 years old this year? We were played a special song (which is how Sikhs show praise to God) and the people at the Gurdwara were kind enough to prepare a meal for us to eat before we walked back to school. This trip helped to bring the religion to life for us and we loved being open-minded and respectful towards a religion and culture that most of didn't know very much about.
