Girls on Track UK is an initiative managed by Motorsport UK, whose main aim is to inspire, connect and showcase females in motorsport as well as in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. Through active, engaging activity days for schools, they aim to excite and encourage girls into believing that there is a rightful place for females within the motorsports industry.
This term, 10 of our Year 6 girls, who have worked extremely hard in PE this term, were invited to the Girls on Track UK event at TeamSport Reading on Tuesday 1st November.
On the day, the girls were given the opportunity to take part in the following activities:
· Drive go karts at Team Sport’s Indoor Karting Circuit
· Experienced life in a racing pit lane by performing a pitstop challenge
· Embarked in an engaging engineering-based activity building a lego go kart and coding it to performs range of functions
· Worked with a motorsports presenter and carried out a piece to camera
· Tested their reactions with some fun games, including a batak light game with young engineers from a competing F1 in Schools competition.
The experience was absolutely overwhelming, and the girls were extremely humbled to have been invited to such a fantastic day full of educational fun. We hope that this will inspire them and more girls to continue their adventures with Motor Sport in the future.
They definitely enjoyed life in the fast lane!
KS2 School Councillors had an amazing experience visiting The Houses of Parliament. We had the opportunity to tour the Houses of Parliament and see the House of Lords and House of Commons. We were lucky enough to watch a live debate happening too! We then had a law and debating workshop where we learnt all about how bills are debated and passed. We even got to debate our own bill!
Year 3 participated in Stone Age Day to help consolidate their learning this term. They had the opportunity to take part in a Stone Age workshop where they went back in time and experienced what life was like in pre- historic times by looking at different artefacts. They also created their own cave paintings and made their very own clay pot. Everybody dressed up and looked fantastic!
At Penn Wood we like to go above an beyond! This week, in order to celebrate cycle to school week, we went that extra mile. Some of our Year 5 and 6 children took completed their level 2 cycle training this week.
The training develops skills for cycling on single-lane roads with simple junctions and moderate traffic and includes core functions for safe and responsible cycling. During the course, riders were required to;
-Make frequent observations
-Choose and maintain the the most suitable riding position
-Communicate intentions to others and understand the priorities on the road, particularly at junctions.
The instructor assessed each individual rider's independent cycling skills and accesses them against the UK National Standards for cycle training.
The children were brilliantly brave and thoroughly enjoyed their experience, especially on the road cycles. I recently read a quote that inspired me, it read, "If you do something right the first time, it isn't hard enough!" Very true words.
Congratulations to all of the children who took part. You didn't give up and I was privileged to see your hard work and dedication pay off. Well done!
Kind regards,
Mrs Downer
Children in Year 5 enjoyed a trip to West Wittering beach on Wednesday 6th July.
It was a long trip down to the coast but the faces of the children as they saw the beach and the sea made the trip well worth it!
Particular highlights of the day included paddling in the sea (some children even spotted some fish!) and enjoying a lovely refreshing ice lolly.
It was perfect weather for a beach trip and Mrs Girle commented on the impeccable behaviour of the children throughout the day. Well done Year 5!
Year 2 had an exciting time visiting Beale Park as part of their Science topic – living things and animals including humans. During the trip, the children had an opportunity to explore the park which they found fun and stimulating. They enjoyed seeing the wildlife really closely and the train ride which added more fun to their trip. In addition, the children loved exploring the park playground which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Year 4 had an exciting time on their trip to Wellington Country Park. They had a pond workshop, in which they used fishing nets to find different creatures that lurk beneath the clear waters of the park. They were then able to see them closer up and learn all about them, with the help of the lovely staff at the park. The children loved their visit to the animal farm, where they learnt all about the different qualities that a habitat needs for animals to survive and were able to see how they move and their appearance in real life. They also completed many more fun activities at the park.
On Tuesday, Nursery and Reception Children were visited by Basil and Crew, who brought with them some beautiful animals!
The children were able to stroke, hold, feed and even brush the animals and loved getting so close to them.
Each of the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
We were selected to participate in the Commonwealth Games Baton Relay in Slough. Penn Wood, along with many other schools, had the privilege of being part of this fantastic event on Wednesday 6th July.
Abdul and Ayesha were carefully selected for their tremendous efforts throughout the term. Not only have they given 100% in their individual efforts, but they have supported and encouraged others to do the same, which meant they were able to embark on this fabulous journey together.
Firstly, they awaited the arrival of the baton from St Anthony's school, and there was a thriving atmosphere from the support of the Year 6 pupils. After a quick changeover, they set off on their adventures to Pheonix Academy, where they were greeted by two pupils, eagerly waiting to run their leg of the race.
The race ran from Monday, all the way through to Thursday and we were invited to enjoy the very last leg of the run, through Wexham School. We were pleasantly surprised to see the whole school had made posters and were cheering everyone through the the finishing line. It was an amazing experience and one that we won't forget in a while. During the celebration assembly, each of the schools were awarded a beautiful plaque, which is now displayed proudly at the front of the school.
Lucy Wood, an international England hockey player, gave an inspiring speech about not giving up on your dreams and talked us through the highs and lows of her career so far.
After the ceremony, the children were invited to try a range of activities with experts from the field coaching them. Events included hockey, cricket, basketball, Judo and even circus activities!
All in all, I think you'll agree, a superb celebration of sports and festivities! A special well done to Ayesha and Abdul, but what a humbling adventure to have as a school.
Well done Penn Wood!
