We participated in the RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch. We enjoyed finding out about the different birds living in the UK and we worked hard with our partners to identify the birds that we spotted around the school. We mostly saw seagulls and crows but some classes were lucky enough to see two red kites circling our school field. Some children also spotted a green parakeet, which wasn't on our list of birds! When we stood quiet and still in the woods, we could see some smaller birds like sparrows flitting around from tree to tree. It was lovely to see so many children getting outdoors during the Birdwatch - a perfect mindful activity to lead us into Children's Mental Health Week.
Miss Hullait and Mr McCollum shared an assembly this morning about Children's Mental Health Week. The theme this year is 'Growing Together'. We have sent families an email today linking to some resources so that you can support your children at home.
We need each other more than ever right now! This month let's focus on reaching out to connect with others and doing our best to be a good friend. Our acts of kindness and connection ripple out and impact so many more people than we realise - and they also boost our own happy hormones too! In stressful times people around us may be feeling the strain, so let's try to keep calm, take time to listen and show compassion.

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, is the main Chinese festival of the year. As the Chinese use the lunar calendar for their festivals the date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year. In year 3, we have spent the Spring term learning all about Chinese New Year and the Shang Dynasty. We were lucky enough to have Chinese New Year fall during the term time and thought it would be a great way to bring together all of our learning.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, we took part in a variety of activities including:
We had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day. All of the children made a corner bookmark that they can use at home to mark their page in their books - the children got very creative.
The children dressed up as their favourite book character and brought their linked book to school. They could also wear their own brightly coloured clothes if they chose to - this reflects the light and brightness that books bring to our lives.
We love books and reading at Penn Wood!
We've joined the journey to celebrate the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. The children will go on a virtual climb up Mount Spirit and learn about the the sports of the winter games.

Year 3 participated in 'Stone Age Day' and had so much fun! They had the opportunity to take part in a Stone Age workshop where they went back in time and experienced what life was like. They also created their own cave paintings and even made their very own clay pot. Everybody dressed up and looked fantastic!
Following on from Mrs Girle's assembly this morning, you are able to sign up for Molly Oldfield's Podcast - Everything Under the Sun. You might also want to submit your own questions to ask to be answered.
