We hope the whole school community enjoyed Interfaith Week this year! It was a brilliant way to celebrate and understand different faiths.
We started the week with a virtual assembly from a professional Indian dancer called Nikita from the Dancing Nikita Company. She taught the children about Kathak dancing and we all joined in and learnt some dance moves!
In the middle of the week, year 4 had the unique opportunity to have a dhol workshop by a professional dhol player called Lakhan from High Rated Drummers and Baja Beats UK. The children learnt about the drum that originates from India and got to play a beat on it too! At the end of the school day, Lakhan performed to the school community and it was smiles all round!
Throughout the week, each class learnt how to write the first letter of their first name in Arabic. Every class wrote their Arabic letters on a jigsaw piece to make a whole jigsaw for the class. This shows how connected we are, no matter what our faith or background!
To end the week, classes had time to share traditions from their faiths and cultures as well as to ask questions, because it's okay to ask and be curious! Some classes enjoyed cake from a local baker, Neelam from Sweet Vision, as they chatted about their religions and beliefs.
On Tuesday 19th October, fencing coaches from Little Muskeeteers came into school to deliver workshops to pupils in years 3, 4 and 5. During the course of the workshop, pupils acquired new fencing skills and worked on their balance and coordination. This was the first time the children had taken part in a fencing activity.
“It was wonderful to see how engaged the pupils were in the activity. They showed great self-control and confidence. They were able to master the ‘on guard’ position very well indeed. They loved taking part in a new activity. “

We were thrilled to welcome James Carter to Penn Wood yesterday. James is a widely published poet and author. He did assemblies for Key Stage 1 and Reception, and then lead workshops with years 1 and 2. In the afternoon, he visited the Reception classrooms to share some more poems and riddles with us. We all thoroughly enjoyed our day!
Year 3 had the pleasure of visiting Beale Park this Autumn. We all had a fun and lovely day walking around the park and meeting lots of different animals. The children had the opportunity to participate in a workshop where they were able to touch and feel a variety of insects and reptiles. Some really brave children stroked the snakes and even stroked the skin of a tarantula!
Active Movement
At Penn Wood School, we are committed to the Active Movement programme. We now know that sitting less, standing often and moving more as part of our everyday routine has a major impact on physical and emotional well-being.
What we do at school?
We have made classroom routine changes so that we can be more active. For example, we stand up when we answer a question. The class stands when the register is taken. Lesson delivery becomes more dynamic by adding standing and moving. Pupils also have the opportunity to go on active walks around the school environment.
What you can do at home?
The Active Movement programme is designed so that the entire community benefit and also act as a support to each other. At home, talk to your children about Active Movement and how it affects school life. Join in with their homework and encourage them to sit less and move more at home. Add Active Movement to your own daily routine whether you are at work or at home. Use the car less often and take a regular family walk. And don’t forget to share this information with elderly relatives too – sitting less will improve their muscle strength and balance too.
Thank you very much to Lush who have gifted all of our children and staff with some of their products as an act of kindness. The children will be bringing home a bath bomb this week.
In year 5, we are learning about Electricity in Science. The children explored different equipment to make a range of complete circuits. In DT, as a part of electrical systems project, we are designing and making our own electric board games. Children worked in groups of 3, planned the questions and answers for their games. Then they used their knowledge about complete circuits to design and make their games. When a child matches the correct answer to the question, the circuit gets complete, as a result the light bulb glows. It was a very enjoyable experience for all the children in Year 5.
The Healthier Together programme relies upon patients and healthcare professionals working together to improve how local healthcare is delivered. The website provide advice for parents, young people and pregnant women, and clinical resources to support healthcare professionals – which means that your child is likely to receive consistently high-quality care, irrespective of which healthcare professional they see.
