A gift from Lush

Thank you very much to Lush who have gifted all of our children and staff with some of their products as an act of kindness. The children will be bringing home a bath bomb this week.

In year 5, we are learning about Electricity in Science. The children explored different equipment to make a range of complete circuits. In DT, as a part of electrical systems project, we are designing and making our own electric board games. Children worked in groups of 3, planned the questions and answers for their games. Then they used their knowledge about complete circuits to design and make their games. When a child matches the correct answer to the question, the circuit gets complete, as a result the light bulb glows. It was a very enjoyable experience for all the children in Year 5.

Longridge - Y6

On Monday and Tuesday last week, Year 6 had the opportunity to visit Longridge activity centre in Marlow. It was a long and adventurous day but everyone had such a wonderful time! All the children were able to have a go at a wide range of activities such as: climb the climbing wall; swing through the air on the 3G swing; help each other up Jacob’s ladder; compete against each other in lazar tag competitions and even paddle across the river on rafts that they made themselves (getting very wet in the process!).

It was a fantastic day and we are looking forward to sharing more photos with parents during their last assembly.

Year 3 Clay Workshop

Year 3 had an exciting opportunity to work with a real clay artist in school. They learnt how to use clay effectively and use special tools to create their own pots. In Art, they have been learning about royal busts and looking at the proportions of facial features, so they used this knowledge to make faces on their clay pots. Their pots will be fired at the artist's studio so the children are patiently waiting for their fantastic clay pots to return!

Year 2 History of the Olympics

Year 2 participated in an exciting workshop all about the history of the Olympics. They went in a time machine and explored the origin of the Olympics from 3000 years ago. Using drama and role play, they were able to imagine what it was like to ride on a chariot and take part in a wrestling match as well as experience what it was like to wear an olive wreath as a winner. They also explored all the different games that athletes competed in the past and in modern times.

Visit from Aaron Phipps

On Wednesday 19^th May, Aaron Phipps, a Parlaympian rugby and basketball player came and visited Penn Wood school. Having contracted meningitis as a teenager, he spoke of the choices he had to make and how he decided to do everything in his power to make the most of his disability, ending up representing the UK at basketball in 2012 Paralympics. In assemblies to key stage 2 pupils, he spoke passionately of this perseverance and determination. Year 5 pupils took part in a workshop where they discovered more about how energy and endurance which helped him to scale Mount Kilimanjaro.

We wish Aaron all the best in the Tokyo Paralympics!

Little Bugs

Washing hands before meals and after the loo means the miserable Tummy Bug won't affect you.'

In May, Penn Wood School welcomed Tina Stubbs, from Life’s Little Bugs, who taught our youngest pupils all about good hand hygiene. Pupils in Early years, year 1 and 2 took part in a workshop where they heard a story about the nasty Tummy bug, practised careful hand washing skills and also had the opportunity to make their own nasty bug out of playdough. The children not only thoroughly enjoyed themselves but also learnt an important lesson.

Virtual Visit: Baroness Floella Benjamin

Baroness Floella Benjamin spoke to us about 'Coming to England', books she wrote about her experience of moving to England from Trinidad and Tobago. She spoke to us about courage and always doing the right thing.

We learnt so much about her life and all she has done to overcome adversity and yet she had such a positive view. She wants everyone to be kind and has campaigned for children for many years of her life.

Reception's Virtual Author Visit with Rachel Bright

Our Reception children had a virtual author visit with Rachel Bright and enjoyed a very interactive session. Rachel shared her new book 'The Whale Who Wanted More' and then taught the children how to draw Humphrey the whale - they all had a go! Each class was asked to draw their own character and Rachel finished the session by reading 'The Squirrels Who Squabbled'. Thank you so much to Stories by the Sea for including us in this wonderful event.
