  • YEAR 1 - WINDSOR CASTLE

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
On Tuesday 9th July Year 1 went on a trip to Windsor Castle. This trip was planned to support our learning in History about Windsor and why it is an important place in history and today. The day was packed full of activities which gave the children a great insight into what life at the castle would have been like in the past and what it is used for today. We walked through the State Apartments and admired the amazing paintings and furniture. We also had lots of fun trying to spot the white shields in St George's Hall of knights who had committed treason! St. George's Chapel was our next stop and it was wonderful to see where some people come to worship as well as the place where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married last year, alongside many other important events. We also took part in a taught session where a member of staff at the castle talked to us about what life was like hundreds of years ago in the castle and about all of the different kings and queens who have lived there over time. One of our favourite parts of the day was watching the Changing of the Guards. It amazed us how good the marching band were and we even tried marching like the soldiers ourselves! Year 1 represented Penn Wood proudly and they showed wonderful respect and kindness throughout the day.
  • YEAR 3 - CAREERS EVENT

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
In Year 3, we had a very exciting morning. We invited guest speakers into our school for a Careers Event. We prepared questions for the guest speakers before the event, which gave us the confidence to get stuck in and come up with our own questions on the day too. There were visitors from the Police, a doctor, nurse and social care worker, some musicians/ conductors, a computer programmer and bank consultant. Once everyone had introduced themselves and their jobs, we were able to move around Treetops, finding out more about their careers, how long it took to train in that area, their favourite part about their jobs etc. We loved trying on uniforms, playing the piano and looking through the Doctor's bag! This event has helped to broaden our horizons and set our aspirations high for the future.

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
On the 5th June, Reception were lucky enough to have visit from Amber from Wild Science. Amber brought in lots of different pets for us to touch and hold. We met Kelly and cockroach, Freddy the tree frog, Barry the bearded gecko, Stanley the snake and Hector the rabbit. We had a wonderful time learning all about the different pets. Amber told us about what they eat, where they live and their favourite activities. Did you know that cockroaches have a hard shell to protect them on the rainforest floor? All of the children were very brave and treated the animals respectfully. The children came back really inspired by their workshop and eager to share their experiences with their parents.
  • RECEPTION - WELLINGTON

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
On the 7th May, Reception visited Wellington Country Park for the day. We had a wonderful time learning all about different farm animals, riding the train, exploring the enchanted forest and playing at the adventure playground. We even met three Billy Goats just like the goats in the story we have been learning about! We were lucky enough to have warm weather which meant we could have a picnic outside. One of the highlights of the trip was playing on the pirate ship climbing frame as we have recently been learning all about pirates. The children came back really inspired by their day and eager to share their experiences with their parents.

The day started with an inspirational assembly with Ian sharing his life story and explaining how important having resilience was in helping him to overcome huge obstacles and be successful in the sporting world. • YEAR 3 - KEW GARDENS

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
Year 3 couldn’t wait to finally go to Kew Gardens! We had been learning about it for weeks, studying advertisements for Kew Gardens and writing persuasive letters to Mrs Girle to allow us to go on this trip. This meant we knew what to expect and what to look out for when we arrived. It was even better than we expected. We loved exploring the state of the art glasshouses and all the exotic plants inside. We were lucky because there was a fantastic Orchid festival on in one of the glasshouses. The weather was beautiful, which meant we could rest our legs and have a picnic outside with our friends. To tie in with our recent Science unit on plants, we took part in an educational workshop where we got to pollinate flowers with paintbrushes!
  • YEAR 1 - BEALE PARK

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
This term Year 1 visited Beale Park as part of their learning of animals in science. The day was full of wonderful activities such as a train ride around the park, an opportunity to look at toys from the past and seeing model boats, as well as seeing all of the incredible birds and wildlife at the park. We saw wallabies, lemurs, meerkats, monkeys and lots of different birds and reptiles! Year 1  learnt so much about these fantastic animals and the habitats they live in and they came back to school bursting with knowledge and eager to learn even more! A fantastic, but very wet, day was had by all and our trip to Beale Park was an incredible experience that the children wont forget! The children behaved extremely well and were proud representatives of Penn Wood School.
  • YEAR 5 - PLANETARIUM VISIT

    Thu 17 Oct 2019
Year 5 recently enjoyed an eye-opening trip through the universe! As part of the children’s topic of Earth and Space, a learning dome was erected in the school hall.  Inside the dome, the children were taken on a tour around our planet. Children discovered our place in the solar system and were shown how to spot a range of star clusters. By the end of the visit, the children were better equipped to knowledgeably study the night skies. Using their detective and observation skills, they should, amongst other things, now be able to understand why day turns into night and what makes the moon look different shapes.
